MINT in German, in English STEM, refers to the subjects Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathmatics. Students and especially female students should be encouraged through special STEM programmes at schools to distinguish themselves in the subjects mentioned without being afraid to try something new. Girls in particular still tend to choose other profile subjects. They should be made to enjoy the natural sciences.
Since recently this semester, Mannheim University of Applied Sciences has been offering training for its students to become STEM Role Models. The Faculty of Electrical Engineering at Mannheim University of Applied Sciences warmly welcomes this development.
After successful participation in the training, a student from the Faculty of Chemical and Process Engineering at Mannheim University of Applied Sciences will take up his position as the first STEM Role Model. Together with nine other role models, he will supervise hands-on activities for students at the Mannheim University of Applied Sciences.
In the first module of the training, which is offered by the MINT Contact Point of the Mannheim University of Applied Sciences, the students learn the pedagogical-didactic basics of dealing with groups of students. They can deepen their knowledge in a practical exercise in module 2. In the final feedback discussion, the trained role models receive helpful tips and suggestions for their work. The training consists of a total of five teaching hours, which are credited to the "Key Competencies Seminar" through the university's Career Centre.
Even after the training, the STEM Contact Point is available to advise the role models on pedagogical and didactic questions and is the contact point for the students.
The hands-on activities for pupils and the Role Model Programme are organised within the framework of the joint project MINTcon. - a BMBF-funded STEM cluster of Mannheim University of Applied Sciences, the City of Mannheim and the Metropolregion Rhein-Neckar GmbH. This is an extracurricular promotion of children and young people in the subjects Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathmatics (=STEM - German: MINT).
